Algonquin Bound makes planning canoe trips in Algonquin Park simple for you. From day trips to multi-day adventures, we work with each group to choose the best routes, and trip length based on experience, and goals. Optional food packages are available for those who want an all-inclusive trip.

With local knowledge built from decades in the park, we help you avoid common pitfalls and so you can focus on enjoying the scenery, and time in Algonquin Park.

Paddle the Barron Canyon- Self Guided Day Trip

$52.50 per person

Experience one of Algonquin Park’s most spectacular paddling routes on this 4 - 6 hour self-guided day trip. The Barron Canyon features glacier-carved waters framed by jagged cliffs rising nearly 100 m overhead. Suitable for all skill levels, small groups, and families, this trip offers easy travel, short portages, and unforgettable scenery. Choose from the multiple route options below to tailor your adventure. Along the way, enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings, keep an eye out for local wildlife and enjoy endless photo opportunities in one of the park's most iconic landscapes.

What's Included

Based on two people/one tandem canoe:

  • Expedition Kevlar Canoe (upgrade to a lighter or 3 person canoe available upon request)
  • 2 lifejackets, 2 paddles, 1 safety kit
  • 1 waterproof bag (15L-25L)
  • 1 waterproof map (you can keep it!)
  • 1 yoke pad
  • Delivery and pick up of the canoe from Squirrel Rapids or Brigham Lake
  • Information pamphlet and expert advice

What to Bring

  • Small backpack
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses & sunscreen
  • Water (2L per person)
  • Rain gear (proper jacket & we suggest rain pants in colder months)
  • Secure footwear for portaging that can get wet, no flip flops or bare feet (old running shoes work well)
  • Weather appropriate clothing- May, June, Sept & Oct bring warm clothes
  • Insect repellent, bug jacket, head net (optional but highly recommended in May/June)
  • Camera (optional)
  • Swimsuit & towel (optional)
  • Algonquin Provincial Park Daily Vehicle Permit (https://reservations.ontarioparks.com/)
  • A positive attitude and paddling muscles!

Additional Information

Pick one of these 3 options for your day trip, you can note your choice in the special notes at time of booking:

1. Squirrel Rapids Return (Out & Back)
Launch and finish at the Squirrel Rapids access point. Paddle upstream to the Barron Canyon and return the same way.

  • 2 portages: 420 m each way
  • Minimal logistics, no shuttle required

2. Brigham Lake to Squirrel Rapids (One-Way)
Launch at Brigham Lake and paddle downstream through the Barron Canyon, finishing at Squirrel Rapids.

  • 4 portages: 230 m, 120 m, 430 m, and 350 m
  • Requires a vehicle shuttle

3. Brigham Lake Return (Out & Back)
Launch and finish at Brigham Lake, paddling downstream to the canyon and returning upstream.

  • 6 portages: 230 m, 120 m, and 430 m each way
  • Allows quicker access to the main canyon section

Other notes:

  • Although Option 1 & 3 include both upstream and downstream travel, there is no noticeable current and paddling is easy in both directions.
  • Shuttle service for Option 2 may be available with advanced notice and an additional fee.
  • Portage trails are well marked but uneven and rocky in places. Supportive footwear is strongly recommended.
  • Parking and vault toilets are available at both Brigham Lake and Squirrel Rapids access points.
  • The Barron Canyon hiking trail offers spectacular views from above but is a separate activity and is not accessed from the water.
  • Rental rates are subject to HST.
  • Pricing is based on a minimum of two people.

Guided – Overnight Trip

2,3,4 and 5 day Options Available Designed to be the no hassle way to explore Algonquin Provincial Park, our overnight guided trips are a great way to get in touch with the Canadian wilderness. Our experienced Algonquin Park guides plan and prepare your meals and help you with every aspect of your adventure. Learn more about the history and ecology of the park, learn how to identify animals and animal signs, improve your map reading and campfire lighting skills, share stores and so much more. Available by advance reservation only. Pricing depends on time of year and group size.

If you are inexperienced, looking to sharpen your skills or just prefer to have a professional help you with all aspects of your trip, we recommend trying Algonquin Bound’s guide service. All of our guides are experienced Algonquin Park trippers with first aid certification. They will plan and prepare your meals and help you with every aspect of your adventure.

An added bonus of having a guide is that they are well schooled in the history, ecology and geography of Algonquin Park providing a unique educational element to your trip. They will also be glad to help you with your outdoor skills through one-on-one training for everything from making a fire to paddling. For added entertainment, our guides have a wealth of interesting stories and tales to tell around the campfire to help make a guided trip a truly memorable adventure.

All trips are customized to your group size, fitness level, interests and special requests and can be as long or as short as you like.

Let us take the mystery out of Algonquin Park canoe tripping. Our experienced Algonquin Park guides will take you on a personalized trip through the park that includes teaching your group more about the exciting aspects of canoe tripping. All your gear and a shore side lunch are included. Our guides can even be used as a first day introduction before heading out on your own for a longer trip. Available by advance reservation only. Smaller and larger group rates as well as children rates are available. Pricing depends on time of year and group size.
